Softball Team Advances To Championship Round With Sweep of Cal

CALIFORNIA, PA-- Bloomsburg University advanced to the championship round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference softball playoffs by taking two games from California, PA on Saturday. The Huskies won by scores of 3-2 and 7-0. Bloomsburg will advance to next weekend's championship tournament at Lock Haven and will be the number three seed. The Huskies will face Kutztown in the opening game of the single-elimination event with the winner facing Lock Haven for the PSAC title and the automatic berth in the NCAA championships.

In the final game of the first round Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) tossed a two-hit shutout for the Huskies. Fisher did not walk a batter and allowed struck out three. The strong pitching performance was backed by timely hitting from Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore), Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) and Shen DeBaro (Milton/Milton).

In a four-run second inning DeBaro and Lazorka each drove in two runs, while in the fourth Reed hit a two-run homer giving the Huskies a 6-0 lead. Fisher retired the final 11 batters she faced to earn the victory.

Bloomsburg advanced to the final game of the opening round with a 3-2 win over the Vulcans. The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when the Huskies got consecutive singles from Emily Young (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia), Nikki Shiko (Kulpmont/Southern Columbia) and DeBaro to load the bases. Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) then followed with a two-run single scoring both Young and Shiko. Cal tied the score with two runs in the top of the sixth inning courtesy of a two-run homer from Johnson.

The Huskies went back on top with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a run scoring single by Neyhard plating Shiko who was hit by a pitch. Reed went the distance striking out eight, walking just one and giving up just three hits. Neyhard finished 2-3 for the Huskies with three RBI.

Bloomsburg is now 33-8 on the year.
